“I’m Sorry, Please Forgive Me, Thank You, I Love You” – Is this all you know about Ho’oponopono?
Ho’oponopono is a traditional Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness. The word translates roughly as:
“To make right” or “to correct an error.”
Historically, it was a group process practiced by Hawaiian families, led by a kahuna (healer) or elder, to resolve interpersonal conflict and restore harmony. Everyone involved would come together to confess wrongs, express remorse, forgive, and release each other from blame.
The Four Phrases – What They Really Mean
1. “I’m Sorry” – Acknowledging that something (in you) has created the issue—even if you’re unaware of it.2. “Please Forgive Me” – Asking for forgiveness for whatever data, memory, or belief you hold that contributed to the problem.
3. “Thank You” – Expressing gratitude—to the Divine, to the process, to your inner self—for the opportunity to heal.
4. “I Love You” – Sending love to the situation, the memory, the person, and to yourself. Love is the universal healing force.
